HOUSTON, TX – Singer-songwriter Glenna Bell announces an April 15 release date for her new CD, Lone Star: Songs and Stories Straight from the Heart of Texas, the provocative new album of songs from the native Texan. Produced by Mark Abernathy and recorded at Sugar Hill Studios in Houston, The Finishing School in Austin and Sea Fog Studio in England, Lone Star offers an authentic array of songs ranging in mood and tempo from a cover of the chart-topping ballad, “Everybody’s Changing,” by the UK band Keane, which showcases its writer Tim Rice-Oxley on piano and harmonium, to Glenna’s all-original “Pig in Lipstick Blues,” featuring veteran Austin players Johnny Nicholas (Asleep at the Wheel) on boogie-woogie piano/guitar and George Reiff (Joe Walsh) and Rick Richards (Ray Wylie Hubbard) on bass and drums.

Themes run the gamut from story-songs of Glenna’s life in Texas (“Poor Girl (in Blue),” “Shiner Bock & ZZ Top” and “What It Was Was The Art Guys”); to upbeat old-school pop-rock love songs (“So in Love with You” and “Tonight’s the Night”); to the enigmatic and haunting "Christmas Is Coming,” a pre-release for the 2015 holiday as a follow up to “Be My Valentine (On Christmas),” which garnered 194,000 streams on Spotify after being selected for their special holiday playlist in 2014; plus a uniquely Texan and deeply sincere take on Don Henley’s “Heart of the Matter,” featuring George Reiff and Rick Richards on bass and drums and a soaring steel guitar part by Austin’s Mike Hardwick (Jerry Jeff Walker). Lone Star also boasts a gorgeous cover for both vinyl and CD formats (distributed by Burnside Distribution) designed by French-Canadian artist, Natali Leduc, with captivating photography by Amy Morris shot on location at Glenna’s hundred year old wood frame house at the shadowy-sunshiny edge of downtown Houston.

“As life accelerates and the world becomes increasingly more complicated, I wanted to take a step back, slow down and spend time alone at home writing this collection of songs that are meant to be heard in private spaces and enjoyed from the perspective of a listener, much as a reader would consume a good book, rather than from the vantage point of someone who is out to drink and dance the night away to the backdrop of a band,” says Glenna about Lone Star. “The theatrical element of Perfectly Legal: Songs of Sex, Love and Murder continues to be ever present in my writing and performance (and “Pig in Lipstick Blues” is even quite danceable!), but here the primary focus is on the sincerity and authenticity of lyric and vocal supported by real instruments played adeptly by human hands. Glenna Bell is a graduate of the prestigious University of Houston Creative Writing Program, where she studied with Pulitzer prize-winning playwright, Edward Albee, and she is an established country-blues-folk artist who has been honored by the State of Texas in a House Resolution recognizing her musical contribution to the state. Lone Star is the fifth installment in a series of self-released albums that chronicle the experiences of a woman, a worker, a wanderer, a dreamer, a thinker, a seer, a stubborn free spirit who refuses to fail. Her last album, Perfectly Legal: Songs of Sex, Love and Murder, generated both extensive radio airplay and rave press reviews.

Glenna Bell regularly performs at a number of Houston venues, including La Carafe (Third Tuesdays @ Historic La Carafe in February, March, April and May) and The Nightingale Room in Downtown Houston (March 10). Our 2010 round-up continues, with Tim's highlights of the year.

1. Favourite album of 2010?

I think the two records that have really blown me away this year are the Arcade Fire album and the secondVampire Weekend album. Of the two I would pick Vampire Weekend as my favourite, just because it's so full of life and original sounds and ideas.

2. Favourite single?

Zebra by Beach House. Hypnotic and mysterious.

3. Best gig you saw?

Again, probably Vampire Weekend. I was really blown away by the standard of musicianship and the energy from the band and the crowd was relentless. Very inspiring. Also it was at a fairly unusual venue - the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill - which I'm very fond of as we used to go there when I was a kid to watch panto and stuff like that. It's an amazing building and it's brilliant that they have rock bands playing there now.

4. Best gig you played?

I reckon Toronto in July. A hot night down by Lake Ontario. We were really fired up and played out of our skins.

5. Best film you saw?

Another Year is wonderful. It's funny how Mike Leigh just observing normal people living their lives is far more emotionally engaging than just about any film packed full of exciting story lines and big stars.

6. Best journey you made?

Probably getting the train to Italy. Needless to say there was a night train involved. Got to say, the Italian sleepers are not quite in the Deutsch Bahn league though.

7. Best TV show you watched?

Mad Men. It's rare to find a show that's as subtle and intelligent as this. Plus it looks really gorgeous.

8. Best meal you ate?

We had a great impromptu barbecue and party in the summer which is the kind of memory I really treasure. I'd rather eat burned BBQ food with some friends under a summer sky than any number of fancy restaurant meals.

9. Best book you read?

All Quiet On The Western Front. Hard to believe I hadn't read this before. It's just so powerful. And yet the human race still pays so little heed to its history.

10. Best thing you bought yourself?

The DVD of Runnin' Down A Dream - a documentary about Tom Petty that Peter Bogdanovich made a couple of years ago. It's about four hours long so you can really get stuck into it. I didn't even know very much about Tom Petty or his music, but I literally could not stop watching it. It's incredibly inspiring and emotional, totally compelling. It was recommended to me by John Roderick and is quite possibly the best thing I've ever watched.

11. Best thing someone else bought for you?

When I got back from our US tour in the summer, my wife had bought me a battered old Land Rover. I've always wanted one. It smells of oil, lets the rain in and sounds like a tractor - perfect.

12. Best website you visited?

Well, you can't argue with YouTube really. You can find just about anything on there. We were geeking out over the multitracks of Revolver the other day. Musicians are easily entertained by the many "shreds" videos on there, plus this sort of thing which we all loved. We're simple souls really.

13. Best thing that happened in 2010 for Keane?

There were lots of great moments, especially on the US tour in July/August. I have to say Night Train going to number 1 was so unexpected and meant a lot - that was a big deal for us.

14. Best thing that happened in 2010 for you?

Probably meeting Paul McCartney. We all went to see him play in Glasgow and had a bit of a chat backstage. Very exciting indeed.

15. Finally, what are you looking forward to in 2011?

So many things. Mainly the next album. The new record is still only in its very early stages but we're working harder than we ever have before to make it really amazing, so I'm very much looking forward to the day we have a finished record in our hands.

TIM INTERVIEW AT BLENDER

It started, as many ingenious ideas do: over a few, or maybe more than a few, drinks at a cozy bar—specifically, a Dublin pub. A little more than a year later, Tim Rice-Oxley and Jesse Quin, pianist and bassist respectively in Keane, had a new project, a new album, and a new tour on their hands.

Mt. Desolation take their name from the fictional mountain in Kerouac's The Dharma Bums, and the music reflects that nominal starting point, even if the American-style country it aims for often comes off (wonderfully) more Kinks than Cash—more Muswell Hillbilly than Virginia hillbilly. The self-titled album, made with members of Mumford and Sons, Noah and the Whale, and the Killers, is an understated gem, full of melody, brisk storytelling, and barely concealed excitement—no wonder Rice-Oxley was in such a pleasant mood when he spoke to Blender.

A couple of questions that I like from the interview...

What has the reaction to Mt. Desolation been from Tom [Chaplin] and Richard [Hughes] from Keane?

They've been lovely—really good, really encouraging. Jesse and I are very focused on Keane, and very excited about making the next Keane record. We've fit Mt. Desolation around Keane, so it's not like there's been a clash of schedules. And they love the music. Tom's been to quite a few Mt. Desolation gigs, even the first two tiny ones, just to support us, really. They've been brilliant about it; it hasn't caused any problems at all.

Both of those guys appreciate escaping from the Keane thing for a few weeks, getting back to normal life, which I think is very sensible, whereas Jesse and I are obsessives that need to be making music every moment that we're awake.

It might be too early to ask this, but what is the future of Mt. Desolation?

I don't know. We're very lucky that we don't feel the pressure to push it for all it's worth. Our plan is to do this tour and then go back to the UK and start making the next Keane album straight away... and I'm sure that will take up the next two years of our lives!

We have a very strong sense of wanting to continue Mt. Desolation, but it's hard to know yet when or how we will continue. But it's nice to put it aside while there's still a hunger to do more. We really enjoyed making the record, which is important. It's been so fun making it, so fun being on tour. We just did three weeks in the UK, and now we're living the dream bringing the tour to the States. It's been amazing, and I've learned so much from it. I would love to do it again, and I'm very excited to take everything I've learned back to writing for Keane. It's been a real education to me—a real eye-opener.

Keane want to get close to the fans again

KEANE star Tim Rice-Oxley wants the band to return to their routes in 2009 and hit the road for a series of low-key gigs.
The songwriting genius, who has had three No.1 albums with Tom Chaplin and Richard Hughes, is keen to inject a sense of adventure back into touring.

He told the Razz: "The first tour we ever did was me, Tom and Richard in a van driving up and down the UK.
"We started out playing gigs to about seven people at places like King Tut's in Glasgow.
"I loved it - it was a real adventure and that's what being in a band is all about. I miss going on tour with just the three of us. Getting to the venue in one piece used to feel like an achievement.
"I keep trying to persuade the guys to do another of those tours on the sly."

Although honoured to be able to fill larger venues nowadays, Tim misses being close to the fans.
He said: "Very big gigs can feel like you are miles from the crowd. Nothing beats a sweaty room and feeling you're very close to people - it's far more real."

New Tim blog and new pics!

Hi, I've been vanished these days due to boring work but I'm trying as hard as possible to keep this blog with the latest news related to Tim <3
Tim wrote a very interesting blog:

Hello again. It's been a very busy few weeks. We flew out to LA, where we waited for baggage with Engelbert Humperdinck, experienced My-First-Earthquake, watched the Ting Tings, laughed heartily with Bret Easton Ellis, and sat open-mouthed as we witnessed Jon Brion improvise his way through a seamless Pet Sounds-in-five-minutes medley at his legendary Largo night. We also finished our album, and watched Fried Green Tomatoes with the sound off, twice.

Got back to the UK a couple of weeks ago, recorded two b-sides, went back to Berlin and forgot to sleep for three days, watched Flight Of The Conchords a lot and started rehearsing the songs for playing live.

I also finally got round to listening to a CD I was given at the Haugesund Festival last year. It's by a Norwegian songwriter called Susanne Sundf?>, and I have to say it's truly brilliant. Her songs are utterly gorgeous, and I recommend giving the album a spin if you don't already know her music.

Anyway, we'll soon be out on the road, which is deeply exciting. I'm desperate for people to hear the new songs. My current favourites are You Haven't Told Me Anything and Perfect Symmetry, but I'm pretty fickle and keep changing my mind. It's funny - it's been so thrilling and intense making this record that I almost don't want to let it go. It seems strange to hear our own music on the radio. It reminds me of the first time we heard Everybody's Changing on Jo Whiley's show - incredibly exciting but also a little scary! I hope that as we travel around over the next few months we'll hear other people sing these songs along with us - that, for me, is the biggest thrill of all.

I was surprised to recognise the name Engelbert Humperdinck. My dad forced me to find lots of songs of him a couple of months ago. Awww my Timmeh...it's nice to hear from him. I bet Perfect Symmetry will be my favourite too, it's a astonishing fact we have the same likes.

Tim says: (roughly) I think there are a few different things running through the record. It's definitely not anything close to being a concept album, so in some ways Under the Iron Sea was almost like a concept album in that it had got that almost under the Sea darkness, and so it occupied a particular space throughout the record really and this one is more varied, I suppose. Things are repeated like 21st century obsession with fame and being a star, everyone trying to be a star, wanting to live that 15 minutes of fame thing but then on the other hand, one of the other things is much more about a kind of war, I suppose. So you know, trying to approach that from a very sympathetic human point of view. Those two thnigs for example, don't really overlap. One of them is quite frivolous and the other one is quite fundamental and human and very serious... You know I don't feel there's one story on this record. I think it's kind a multicoloured story. What I hope with this record, is that every song has a sense of hope to it. I feel like everything in the song and not necessarily all fun and positive, still has a kind of human sympathy and positivity to it. I hope that every song is uplifting and then inspiring and positive even if it's trying to talk about something which is not necessarily happy. For me, a lot of my favourite songs are like that. I don't think a record has to leave you feeling? meek and depressed in order to be profound and touching and I definitely think this record is much more uplifting and exciting and has a hugely positive energy to every song. I think the overall record will have that same effect.

Completely agree with this man! There's no need for a song to be happy and flying- butterflies-stuff. I think that what it makes a song good is the way it causes an impact for someone. It's indeed really cool they finally found new things to talk about. Anyway, there won't be any problem cos Tim is a brilliant songwriter and the closest and newest proof we have is 'Spiralling'!!!

As you'll have gathered from our many and varied blogs, broadcasts and photos, we've been lost in a world of new music over the last few months - writing songs, pushing our limits, making fools of ourselves, and generally having a wicked time. We started out in Paris, where Jon Brion inspired us to create first and think later. We took the night train to Berlin, where everything came together in an avalanche of experimentation that took us all by surprise; where we made a pact with Stuart Price to ignore the rules of good taste; where we were hypnotised by Marlene Dietrich and spent many a long night throwing ideas around in the crumbling Cabaret-esque glamour of our favourite bar. We've hidden ourselves away in the depths of the English countryside, recorded a new track in London at the last possible moment, and now we're in Los Angeles tying up the loose ends. We've had an amazing time making this album and we're very, very proud of it. It's called Perfect Symmetry and will be released on October 13th.

Tim says: I think it's about trying to tell a story, in the 40 minutes or something, I don't think there's ever a formula for that. A lot of records nowadays are incredibly front loaded, you know in between hit singles - they're the first two songs - you kinda loose interest after that, a lot of them are like that. But if you look back over the many classic albums over the last 50 years a lot of them really haven't *something* in really unexpected and really interesting ways, so it would be fantastic is we could do something like that, but it's interesting how certain songs feeling like they belong in a certain quarter of the album, like there's definitely two songs that I feel were intended to be the last songs on the album, Bedshaped was very much like that, I think when you have a last track on the album, you know. And we always thought Atlantic would be the first song on the album even when it was in demo shape. I don't really know why, I think it just felt like it was building towards something. I think we've got an idea for the first song on this record as well, I think it'll be much more a blast of energy this time, rather than that slow down feel of Atlantic or whatever. I hope we never make a record that feels like it gets a bit boring in the last third. I hope it tells a story and takings a journey.
