In Love with Berlin
David Bowie, U2 and Depeche Mode have all worked in Berlin. Now yet another band has discovered their heart for Berlin. The Britpoppers Keane recorded their new album at the Teldex studios in Lichterfelde.
For Keane the time spent in Berlin was more than just a work arrangement. Tim Rice Oxley has fallen in love with the city and he reveals his favourite places.
Helmholtzplatz ( Prenzlauer Berg): a charming place, surrounded by cute shops and cafes. My favourite bar is the 'Wohnzimmer' [= living room]- with furniture from the 70s, beer and cake.
Schwarzes Cafe ( Kantstrasse 148 / Charlottenburg): We spent long, long nights here to talk about everything under the sun, to drink beer and eat ice cream.
Watergate ( Falckensteinstrasse 49/ Kreuzberg): a great club with a tremendous view over the Spree river. We've celebrated Tom's birthday here.
Tiergarten: On mornings after long nights at the Watergate we've walked through this wonderful Park to get rid of our hang-overs.
The Odeon Cinema ( Hauptstrasse 116/ Schoeneberg): I wished every cinema was like this one. It's like at home [or: you feel as if you are at home]. We went to see 'No country for old men' at the Odeon.
Restaurant Renger-Patzsch - Wartburgstrasse 54/ Schoeneberg): It's a small, cosy [ein Lokal: like a Gastro pub but more old fashioned, usually fairly inexpensive] . A place to relax/switch off. With German cooking [traditional but with a new twist].
Karl-Marx-Allee: The glittering piece of pomp/sumptuousness of the former East Berlin [DDR]. Very impressive, bizarre, and eerie.
Lichterfelde, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, Schoeneberg and Charlottenburg are Berlin boroughs.
Cafes are a mixture of Pub, Gallery, Bar and Coffeshop, often very creatively furnished and decorated and they do a range of inxpensive but really nice food.
Many operate almost around the clock.
Thanks to flipping heck for the translation.
